LG has scheduled a press event for December 1 in New York where it is expected the handset maker will announce its first smartphone to feature an HD display.
Rumored to carry the name of LG Nitro HD, the phone should boast a 4.5-inch 1,280×720-pixel resolution screen, much like the one on Verizon’s recently announced HTC Rezound.
The first sign of the LG P930 came way back in late spring when the model number was spied in an XML file. At the time it was uncovered, 720p displays were not part of general smartphone discussions, so it was assumed that it may ultimately prove to be a tablet.
A trip through the FCC database did little to clear the mystery, adding only that it would offer Bluetooth and WLAN, 802.11n, and WCDMA band V connectivity. Engadget points out that AT&T is expect to carry an LTE-ready version of the Optimus, and it’s possible that this may pan out to be the same device.
In a related note, LG unveiled the Optimus LTE for Korea about a month ago, so it’s also likely that the Nitro HD could bear similar hardware. Assuming this to be the case, the Nitro HD will feature Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture and playback.
When it comes to Android devices, LG generally caters toward the entry-level to midrange demographic, with the Optimus line being a perfect example. Every once in a while, however, the company does unveil something high end, such as the Optimus 2X or Optimus Black. Based on all the Nitro HD rumors, I suspect we’re in for another top-notch Android come next week.
