The entry-level the ZTE Prestige became Boost Mobile’s latest phone on Thursday, targeting first-time buyers with a low price. Running Android 5.1 Lollipop, the Prestige sells for $50 with a limited-time promotion. After January 3, 2016, it’ll sell for double that, $100.

While smartphone vendors battle it out on the high end, companies like ZTE need to aggressively slash prices on the low end to help push volume through the holiday season.

Outfitted with a 5-inch display and 5-megapixel camera, the Prestige has a 2-megapixel shooter on the front that’s designed for selfies.

Although the phone only includes 8 gigabytes of internal storage, the microSD card slot gives users a little bit of breathing room with support for up to 32GB of external storage space for media such as pictures and video. There’s a relatively low-powered 1.1GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM.

Boost Mobile is a prepaid wireless operator utilizing Sprint’s voice and data networks.

Those of you looking for a simple, stripped-down phone could find it with AT&T’s GoPhone prepaid service, which picks up the entry-level Asus ZenFone 2E for $120. (Not to be confused with the much more powerful and expensive ZenFone 2 , of course)

Samsung

Samsung is slated to introduce a new, wallet-friendly Galaxy J7 smartphone in the near future, according to a listing on a Russian retailer’s website.

Related Links

First reported on by SamMobile, the Galaxy J7 allegedly runs Android 5.0 on entry-level hardware. One example? Its large 5.5-inch screen with a relatively low (read: affordable) 720p HD display.

Internally, the smartphone could make use of a 1.2GHz octa-core Marvell processor with 1.5GB RAM. Storage is pegged at 16GB with an optional microSD expansion slot.

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy J7 may include a 13-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel selfie snapper.

As to the overall design and materials of the handset, well, that’s still a little muddy. Although there are photos of phone shown on the Russian site, they look to be the same as a previously rumored Galaxy J1.

Samsung was not immediately available for comment.

The Galaxy J7 figures to be an entry level Samsung with a familiar design language.

Assuming it’s the real deal, the Samsung Galaxy J7 would employ a familiar plastic material and rounded shape that we’ve seen in other Samsung phones.

Given the entry-level nature of this one, I wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung launched this one quietly to a select few markets.

Samsung is expected to announce a new Galaxy Music smartphone on October 11, according to multiple reports from this week.

Despite the obvious promise of music, the handset should have only basic hardware. Features are said to include a 3-inch QVGA (240×320-pixel) display, a single-core 850MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and a 3-megapixel camera. It should run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and come in single-SIM and dual-SIM models.

I’m having a hard time understanding what Samsung is doing with the Galaxy Music, seeing as how this is such outdated hardware. While I understand that it will help to keep prices down, it’s more than two steps backward.

Even early Galaxy Players have larger displays, more memory, and faster processors. That said, the front-facing stereo speakers must be something special.

Considering we’re talking about single- and dual-SIM variants of the Galaxy Music, I suspect we’ll not see this come to the United States. There have been a number of dual-SIM Galaxy phones released under the Duos name, many of which end up in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and emerging markets. Toss in the fact that Galaxy Music is slated to debut at one of Samsung’s German retail stores and this seems even more likely.

Details of an LG “Snapshot” have found their way online this week suggesting that Sprint, or one of its postpaid partners, will offer the handset later this year. Features for the smartphone reportedly include a single-core 1GHz CPU, 768MB RAM, 4GB storage, and a 5-megapixel camera.

Somewhat thin with an 8.8mm chassis, the LS730 also offers a front-facing VGA camera, a 1,700mAh battery, and microSD card slot. The exact type of display the phone will use is unknown, but its expected 800×480-pixel resolution leads me to believe it will hover somewhere around 4 inches in size. The device actually reminds me of the Android 4.0-powered L7 unveiled at Mobile World Congress back in February.

Related stories

I do see two notable omissions in the Snapshot. Given that its rumored specifications suggest a lack of NFC or 4G LTE connectivity, it stands to reason that this may ultimately become a Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile device. The hardware, which would fit better in the midrange of a no-frills no-contract carrier, would look practically antiquated in Sprint’s lineup. According to the source of the speculation, BriefMobile, the Snapshot won’t come to market until the fourth quarter.

NEW ORLEANS–Huawei issued forth no formal product announcement at CTIA 2012, but I did find this new Android smartphone quietly sitting at Huawei’s booth.

The Ascend Y200 is part of Huawei’s latest strategy in naming families of phones. The “Y” stands for youth, which also typifies mass market, entry-level phones with smaller screens, slower processors, and fewer camera extras.

An Android Gingerbread phone, the Ascend Y200 has a 3.5-inch touch screen, a 1GHz processor, and a 3.2-megapixel camera with no flash. It’s a fairly attractive phone nonetheless, with smooth, round lines and a dark body.

The handset-maker will also have other launches in the pipeline over the next few months.
