What we Googled in 2015: Lamar Odom, Donald Trump, Snapchat

If the race for the White House were decided by top Google searches, Donald Trump would already be picking his cabinet.

The billionaire, who is the leading Republican in the US presidential race, was the top trending search term on Google this year when it came to politicians, according to a list of popular search terms Google released Wednesday. Trump and his sweeping bouffant beat out Bernie Sanders, the Democratic senator from Vermont who is also vying for the White House, and Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO running as a Republican.

Google, a unit of Mountain View, California-based Alphabet, is the world’s largest search engine, and its top trending search data serves as a window into what Americans were thinking, watching and doing this year. The top trending searches are those that experienced the greatest spike in traffic over a certain period of time this year.

With a few weeks left in 2015, the overall top trending search in the US is Lamar Odom, the former NBA star and estranged husband of reality star Khloe Kardashian. Odom piqued the public’s interest after he was reportedly found unconscious at a Nevada brothel in October.

Three movies rounded out the Top 10. Google users were fascinated by “Jurassic World,” the smash-hit dinosaur movie; Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” the true story of a Navy SEAL; and “Straight Outta Compton,” a biopic about the rap group N.W.A.

Americans were also apparently flummoxed by new features on Snapchat, the ephemeral messaging service popular with teens and young adults. “How to use the new Snapchat update” topped Google’s “How To” search list.
