How to tell your Facebook friends how to pronounce your name

I don’t have the most difficult of last names to pronounce, but I’ve heard my fair share of it being butchered. Those with more difficult names share in my experience and frustration, I’m sure.

Facebook has a feature tucked away on your profile aimed at teaching others how to pronounce your name, but you need to set it up before it’s visible to those viewing your profile.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Log in to your Facebook account and view your profile page.

A list of options will be provided to you by Facebook, with the site’s best guess of your name’s pronunciation. You can click on the play icon to the right of each entry to hear what the mashup of letters sound like in practice.

If Facebook has the winning combination already displayed, select it. If not, you can enter your own attempt using the tips provided by Facebook. Once you’re happy with the pronunciation, click Save.

Going forward, anyone who visits your profile will have the option to listen to your name being pronounced, potentially saving them embarrassment when you meet in real life.
