Online giant eBay has paired with the bricks and mortar retailer Woolworths for a trial kicking off in Sydney and Tasmania across 90 Woolworths and Big W stores. Buyers will be able to choose from 40,000 items on eBay stores and, at the checkout stage, simply choose their nearest store for delivery.
According to research commissioned by eBay, one in five online shoppers makes a purchase at least once a week, but 47 percent of shoppers aren’t permitted to receive deliveries at work. As a result, these buyers re-direct purchases or take time off to receive deliveries at home — behaviour that eBay is hoping to address with the new retail partnership.
“The traditional retail model is evolving and the lines between online and offline blurring,” said eBay Merchant Development Director Hamish Moline. “Consumers now expect a more bespoke experience that meets their needs.”
Over the next three years, the companies are expecting more Woolworths and Big W stores added to the network of Click & Collect sites, and as many as 12,000 sellers to get involved as the service “ramps up”.
Click & Collect is currently only available to established online retailers, rather than individuals selling items through eBay, with retailers at launch including electronics sellers Futu Online and No Frills, as well as SurfStich, Your Home Depot and Golfbox. The list of retailers is set to expand to 250 sellers within 2 months.
