Dropbox has finally rolled out its official app for Windows 8.1 tablets and Windows Phone handsets.
Launched on Wednesday, the Windows app and the Windows Phone app allow Dropbox users to tap into their online storage directly from their Windows Start screens and take advantage of several key features. Users also can pin a specific Dropbox folder to the Windows Start screen to open it without having to directly launch the Dropbox app.
In January of 2013, Dropbox unveiled an app for Windows 8.0 and RT, but that version only allowed users to access files from the Start screen. Third-party vendors have been offering Dropbox-compatible Windows 8.1 apps, but this marks the first time that Dropbox is providing an app for the latest versions of Microsoft’s tablet and phone operating system.
The app is a product of the recent partnership between Microsoft and Dropbox, which enables users to access Dropbox directly from their Office apps and edit Office files from the Dropbox app. In addition to benefiting Dropbox and Microsoft users, it benefits both companies by expanding the number of potential customers they can win over.
Through the new Dropbox app, Windows 8.1 and Phone users can back up their photos to Dropbox via the auto-upload feature. They also can mark online files as favorites and access them offline. If users have personal and work accounts on Dropbox, they can access both accounts with the app.
The Dropbox app supports Windows 8.1 and Windows RT devices, as well as Windows Phone handsets running 8 and 8.1. You can find the app by searching for it in Microsoft’s online Windows Store on your tablet or in the Windows Phone store on your phone.
