Can Amazon topple Apple, Spotify in music? (The 3:59, Ep. 122)

Amazon wants to take on Apple and Spotify, and the Echo speaker is its secret weapon.

The online retailing giant on Wednesday launched Music Unlimited, a $10-a-month service that looks a lot like Spotify and Apple Music. The real standout feature is a $4-a-month option that only plays to your Amazon Echo speaker. It’s just another way Amazon wants to get you hooked on Echo and the Alexa digital assistant.

Smart move? Or do folks need to have their music on their phone too?

In today’s podcast, we also discuss whether Samsung’s culling of the Note 7 has set the virtual reality movement back. The company had launched a new Gear VR designed for the ill-fated Note 7, and Oculus had banked on Samsung pushing the medium to a wider audience.

With no Note 7, there’s no extra impetus for VR, either.

Last, we talk about Geofeedia, a program that sucked up data from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to help police track protests across the nation.
