April Fools’ Day 2016: Hamburger Helper’s Lefty drops hip

Lefty, the longtime mascot for Hamburger Helper, has dreams that go beyond the food industry. He also wants to be a mover and a shaker (that’s a great pun if you think about it for a second) in the music industry. It’s an admirable and lofty dream for someone who’s just a white glove with a face on it.

Earlier today, Lefty took his first shot at living his dream by releasing a new hip-hop album for free on Soundcloud. “Watch the Stove” features five tracks that channel the sounds of Jay Z and Kanye West’s collaborative album “Watch the Throne” to express the complex emotions we all feel when there’s not enough time or ingredients to make a nutritious, hot meal at home.

The album has five tracks with titles like “Feed the Streets”, “Food for Your Soul” and “In Love with the Glove.” The album also features vocalizations by rappers such as Dequexatron X000, Retro Specto and illWIN.

Here’s the truly crazy part. Even though it’s meant to be an April Fools’ Day joke, the album is actually pretty good.

It’s scoring a ton of viral traffic thanks to retweets and shares on Twitter. “Hamburger Helper” has even become a trending topic. If this thing gets any bigger, it could set an interesting trend for hip-hop where food becomes a prominent theme in artists’ music. Jay Z could change his name to Jay Ziti. Kanye West could release a new, remix album called “Cruel Simmer.” The possibilities are endless and delicious.
