Pandora will let you control your tunes through Apple Watch with an app available at the launch of the wrist-worn computer.
The first streaming-music service to announce an app for the device, Pandora said in a blog post that its Apple Watch app will provide a way to adjust volume, change tracks and see what’s playing on a paired-up iPhone by glancing at your wrist.
Apple Watch will be a test not only for the giant computer maker but also for the growing “wearable” category of devices. As the company’s first new product under Chief Executive Tim Cook, the consumer response to Apple’s timepiece will will be scrutinized as an indicator of Cook’s success taking the reins from founder Steve Jobs and a barometer of whether wearable computers can have mass-market appeal.
Pandora, with more than 81.5 million monthly listeners, is the biggest online music-streaming service on the Internet.
Apple products have been instrumental in Pandora’s growth. The company credits its presence on the first iPhone at launch as a key factor in it breaking away from a pack of early online radio options, and it was supported by the iPad when it first went on sale, too.
On Friday at 12:01 a.m. PT, Apple will start taking preorders for its first smartwatch, which ranges in price from $349 for the basic Apple Watch Sport version to $17,000 for the gold, premium Apple Watch Edition. It hits Apple Stores and some department stores April 24.
