T-Mobile subscribers with a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 can finally bite into the latest flavor of Android.
The carrier announced Monday it will offer Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system to the two Samsung phones. T-Mobile’s support pages describe how to check your S6 Edge+ and Note 5 to see if you need to run the update.
Marshmallow has slogged along with a slow rollout since its November debut. The lengthy wait is a side effect of Android’s unwieldy upgrade process. Phone makers and wireless carriers must test each new version from Google for every device before they can plan and implement a rollout. That means Android users often have to wait months to receive the latest version.
Marshmallow seems to be getting stickier now as more companies push through the upgrade. Earlier this month, Google’s Android Developers Dashboard revealed that Marshmallow doubled its adoption rate over the course of a month. During the week ending April 4, Marshmallow had landed on 4.6 percent of all devices that visited the Google Play Store, up from 2.3 percent the month before.
T-Mobile’s update for the S6 Edge+ and the Note 5 will reach subscribers between now and May 20. Consumers on a Wi-Fi connection will be prompted to download the software when it’s available. You can also check for the update manually by tapping Settings, scrolling down to the System section and then tapping the About device setting. You tap Software Update and then OK to check for the update.
The Marshmallow update takes up a hefty 1.34 gigabytes, so you’ll want to allow enough time and bandwidth to install it.
