Amazon plans to add 80,000 temporary employees to its quickly expanding logistics and delivery network for this year’s holiday season.
The company announced Thursday that it would hire thousands of new workers to staff its more than 50 fulfillment around the US. The amount is a 14 percent increase from last season when Amazon said it would hire 70,000 employees for the holidays.
Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations, said Amazon plans on converting some of the seasonal workers into full-time employees, as it has done in the past.
Since the beginning of 2014, Amazon has hired more than 10,000 temporarily employees for full-time roles. “We’re looking forward to converting thousands more across our growing network of fulfillment and sortation centers after this holiday season,” Roth said in a statement.
The company has been rapidly growing its logistics network to ensure faster delivery times for consumers, including Sunday delivery hours, and expected to launch its own shipping network based on its sprawling infrastructure. By the end of the year, Amazon plans to have more than 15 sortation centers in addition to fulfillment. These centers allow for even faster delivery.
In the past, Amazon has been accused of sweatshop-like conditions at its fulfillment centers. The company has since tried to distance itself from the image, launching a career training program for an unrelated discipline, and establishing public tours of its facilities.
