Could Android have kept Nokia on top of the phone world? Conventional wisdom says yes — that had the Finnish firm sided with Google’s green robot early on, today it would still be an independent smartphone titan, and not a part of Microsoft.

Would a bet on Android really have saved Nokia’s bacon however? Having stuck too long with the unintuitive Symbian operating system, there were plenty of onlookers urging the company — which was the biggest phone maker in the world for 14 years from 1998 — to take a leaf from Samsung and HTC’s book and bet big on Google’s mobile OS.
