Sony Ericsson has revealed two new feature phones, one that builds on its recent success with the Xperia brand and the other will resurrect the once superior Walkman name.
The Txt Pro and Mix Walkman will be launched in Q3 and both, surprisingly, will be running a proprietary operating system — not Google’s Android like many of Sony Ericsson’s most recent handset releases. This unique system features the four-corner user interface we saw on the Xperia Mini range last year, with the Txt Pro sporting a slide-out QWERTY keyboard as well. Both handsets also include 3-inch WQVGA (240×400-pixel) touchscreens.
The reintroduction of the Walkman brand is an interesting move for Sony Ericsson; though, with the capabilities of today’s smartphones, it’s hard to see what sort of cache the Walkman name still carries. The Mix Walkman will include an enhanced music player experience with a built-in lyrics app called Zappin, and the ability to record yourself singing your favourite tracks karaoke-style. However, the Walkman will have a difficult journey convincing phone shoppers to avoid Android’s prepaid offerings without offering similar smartphone functionality.
