Last week, Google rolled out the ability for Play store users to purchase apps and various digital content using a PayPal account. As Scott Webster mentioned in his post, you won’t have the option to purchase hardware with a PayPal account, but everything else is fair game.

I prefer to use a PayPal account for stuff like this due it being easier (for me) to track purchases through PayPal. So when Google announced the added capability, I immediately wanted to set it up. Only, I couldn’t easily find the option at first. After some digging around, here’s what I found:

  • In order to edit any of your Play store payment accounts, you’ll need to open the Play store and select a paid app (you can select any app, as we aren’t going to complete a purchase). After approving the requested permissions for the app, tap on the small arrow next to the cost of the app.

  • A menu will drop down, where you can then select “Payment options” from the list.

  • You should then see a list of your current payment services, with another list of available payment services below it. At the bottom of the screen will be a PayPal option. Tap on it.

From here, the rest of the process only requires you to enter your PayPal account info. Your Google Play and PayPal accounts will then be linked to one another, but on other Android device’s you own, and the Play store website.

You might have to manually change the payment option to PayPal each time you make a purchase, but at least the option is there and it’s all set up now.
