KitKat continues to sweeten more Android devices, according to the latest stats from Google.
Google on Monday released the latest update to its Android Developers Dashboard, which shows the percentage of devices that carry the various editions of its mobile operating system. The data is based on the number of Android devices that visited the Google Play store during the seven-day period ending Monday.
Over that period of time, Android 4.4 KitKat scored a 30.2 percent share, up from 25 percent in September and 21 percent for the prior month.
Though more mobile carriers have clearly been making an effort to roll out KitKat, which was released last year alongside the Nexus 5 smartphone, Jelly Bean remains the dominant version of Android with 50.9 percent of the market, a dip from 53.8 percent in September and 54.2 percent the prior month. Among the different versions of Android Jelly Bean, version 4.1.x is in the lead with a 22.8 percent share, followed by version 4.2.x with 20.8 percent and version 4.3 with 7.3 percent.
Of course, things never stand still in the world of Android. Just when one version starts to expand further, another version is prepped to roll out. Android 5.0 Lollipop officially launched on Monday. As such, Google and many Android device makers have already established time frames in which the new version will start to hit phones and tablets.
Lollipop is too new to yet show up on the radar of the Android Developers Dashboard. But we can expect it to lick off a little market share come next month.
Among other flavors of Android observed on Google Play this past week, Ice Cream Sandwich dripped off with an 8.5 percent share, down from 9.6 percent in September. Gingerbread stayed strong with 9.8 percent, though that was down from 11.4 percent in September, And Froyo inched down to 0.6 percent from 0.7 percent in September.
