Stop the presses, forget the Apple Watch — because Chewits are 50! It’s Friday, the sun’s out, so let’s indulge in a bit of tasty, chewy nostalgia.
The delicious British sweet was launched in 1965, and to celebrate, Chewits have unleashed their famous mascot Chewie the Chewitsaurus — known as the “Monster Muncher” when first introduced to TV ads in 1976 — to wreak havoc once again. Where once the loveable lummox chomped and trampled his way through the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Taj Mahal, the Empire State Building and, er, Barrow-in-Furness bus depot, a new app allows you to choose where Chewie leaves a trail of humorous mass destruction.
The Chewits app launches next week and will be available to play for a month. Daily prizes are given away to players and there’s also an additional prize draw. Look out for details on the Chewits Facebook page.
Originally manufactured in Southport during the early 1960s, Chewits first came in strawberry, blackcurrant, orange and banana. Many variations including sour, fizzy and ice cream flavours have been introduced over the years — for instance, I remember having my own severe Fizzy Chewit addiction during the mid ’90s. A British institution: cheers, Chewits!
