He’s terrorized citizens in several movies, but apparently all is forgiven as Godzilla, one of Japan’s scariest kaiju, has become an official resident of Tokyo.

Godzilla — or, more accurately, Godzilla’s massive 12-meter (39-foot) tall head — now resides atop the Toho Cinemas in Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward, and serves as an imposing figure over the heart of the downtown neighborhood. Shinjuku granted special residency to the kaiju, or monster, back in April to celebrate the launch of the Toho Cinemas movie theater and the adjacent Hotel Gracery, a Godzilla-themed hotel.
On May 25, the Shinjuku ward office printed 3,000 copies of Godzilla’s residency papers, so Godzilla fans in the neighborhood could proudly display the residency status of their favorite monster. Twitter user dybastar posted an image of his secured copy, which you can see at the bottom of this post.
According to a translation by Rocket News 24, the certificate documents Godzilla’s birth date, April 9, 1954, which is when the first “Godzilla” movie debuted in theaters, as well as his official residency exactly 61 years later on April 9, 2015. The document also shows why Godzilla became a citizen, with a mission of “promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe.”
Whether Godzilla will be able to draw fans to Shinjuku remains to be seen, but he’s probably already making the ward a safer place. After all, who would want to commit a crime when Shinjuku’s newest and deadliest resident is watching? And with eyes that never shut, Godzilla is always watching.
