Snapchat suffers extended outage, working on a fix

Image-based messaging service Snapchat is experiencing an extended outage, which is preventing some people from loading the app.

Snapchat has acknowledged the problem but hasn’t indicated when it expects service to be fully restored.

“Hi! Some Snapchatters are currently experiencing loading issues. Our team is aware of the problem and working on a fix now!” the company tweeted from the verified Snapchat Support Twitter account.

Snapchat, a fast-growing social video- and image-sharing service, boasted 6 billion video views per day in November. Outages for tech services are not uncommon, especially for those growing quickly, but they can be a big problem for people who use an app as a primary means of communication.

Many Snapchat users are complaining of being affected by the outage, with one on Twitter saying the app wouldn’t refresh after latest update was installed. Other users are receiving error messages and saying that logging out and back in again fails to restore service.

The site Down Detector, which collates reports of outages from users, reports that problems with Snapchat showed up at 2.37 a.m. PT. Of those experiencing issues, Down Detector said 41 percent of users can’t log in or connect to the Snapchat server. A smaller number are unable to send or receive snaps or to refresh the app.

Snapchat did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
