Meet one zoo’s newest baby, an adorable penguin named Bowie

As the world mourns the passing of legendary artist David Bowie, perhaps people will take some tiny comfort knowing the musician’s spirit will live on in a new animal born to the Cincinnati Zoo on Friday.

The first animal born to the zoo in 2016 was an adorable Little Penguin that the zookeepers decided to name Bowie, as the penguin shares a January 8 birthday with the late musician. The zoo gave the penguin his name on Friday and Bowie died of cancer Sunday at age 69.

The keepers were initially torn between Bowie and Elvis, they said in a Facebook post, as both David Bowie and Elvis Presley were born on January 8. But they already had a King Penguin named Elvis, so Bowie emerged as the natural choice.

Little Penguins are the smallest penguins in the world, growing only to about 12 to 13 inches tall (30 to 33 centimeters) on average. They are sometimes called Little Blue, Blue or Fairy Penguins, depending on location. They are commonly found on the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand.

It will probably be a little while before you can see baby Bowie in person at the Cincinnati Zoo, but hopefully the little Starman will be flapping around with his Little Penguin friends sooner than you can say Ziggy Stardust.
