When we last heard from the band OK Go, it was filming one of its quirky music videos with the help of electric unicycles and a drone camera. Now it’s taken the art form to new heights, breaking the bonds of gravity itself in the process.
The video for the band’s song “Upside Down & Inside Out” was shot while the band and crew were weightless aboard a plane that conducts a special parabolic maneuver, providing brief periods of zero-gravity. While the video is only around three minutes long, it was actually shot in one 45-minute long take.

That’s because the parabolic move, which was done above Russia in a S7 Airlines jet, only provides about 27 seconds of weightlessness at a time, according to the band’s website. After each zero-G period, it would take about five minutes for the jet to perform the maneuver again. The routine in the video was choreographed to be broken down basically into 27-second chunks, with the non-weightless sections edited out later to make it seem as if it was one, continuous weightless take.
The whole process took more than one 45-minute flight, however. Over three weeks, the band and crew took 21 flights to plan and practice before the final shoot. That amount of time going in and out of zero G has certain…consequences.
“Over the 21 flights, there were 58 puke events,” the band writes.
