When Apple announced the new iPhone XS, XS Max and XR on Sept. 12, one particular feature captured the imagination of international travelers and multiple phone-owners alike: the dual SIM.

If the processor is your phone’s brain, then the SIM, or subscriber identity module, is its soul — a tiny little chip that stores your phone number and connects you to a cellular network. Essentially, it’s what makes your phone a phone.

If you’ve ever wanted two phone lines on one device, Apple’s new Dual SIM Dual Standby technology could be a life-changer. It will make it much more practical to have two phone numbers on one phone — one for business, another for personal use. And it will make it considerably easier and less expensive to use your own phone when traveling abroad.

iPhones have always had one “plastic” SIM card — until now.

CNET

On Oct. 30, Apple released iOS 12.1, turning on support for its eSIM technology — which allows you to activate additional lines — on the iPhone XSiPhone XS Max and iPhone XR (outside of China). After an initial delay due to issues including “degraded” service and problems linked to visual voicemail, AT&T and Verizon have now begun to support eSIM on the newest iPhones. (T-Mobile has said that it expects to add the feature before the end of the year.)

After some initial hiccups due to technical issues, Apple and some of the largest US carriers have now worked through the kinks of deploying dual-SIM via eSIM. And though it won’t be the decisive factor for most phone shoppers this year, Apple’s support marks a major step closer into the mainstream for dual-SIM phones. Below is a digest of what we currently know about Apple’s take on dual-SIM and eSIM — and what it means for the three 2018 iPhones.

Note: The information presented below represents our current understanding of an evolving technology. If you’re buying an iPhone XS, XS Max or XR to take advantage of dual-SIM and eSIM technology, you’ll need to buy an unlocked phone (see below). Check with your provider before committing to a purchase.

What does Apple’s dual-SIM announcement mean?

The 2018 iPhones will let you have have two different phone numbers on the same phone. You’ll be able to make and receive calls and send and receive texts on either line.

Why would I want a dual-SIM phone?

There are two major benefits. You can have two different phone lines — say, one for business and another for personal use — without the burden of carrying two phones. And when traveling internationally, dual SIM makes it easier to add a local plan to your phone to avoid costly international roaming and data charges.

Read: Why you want a dual-SIM phone

So, the iPhones will have both an eSIM and a plastic SIM?

Yes. The new iPhones will have a traditional plastic nano-SIM, the familiar hardware-based SIM chip that identifies you to your carrier network, and an eSIM, the newer software-based equivalent.

And here’s the big thing: The eSIM can accommodate multiple phone numbers — which you can add, delete and configure right from your iPhone’s settings. In contrast, a plastic SIM needs to be physically removed and swapped.

In theory, once eSIM technology is widely supported by carriers in the US and internationally, Apple could phase out the plastic SIM entirely. For now, by giving the 2018 iPhones both a plastic SIM and eSIM, Apple is covering all of the bases.

What is Dual SIM Dual Standby?

Apple’s take on dual SIM is called Dual SIM Dual Standby. It means that the new iPhones can manage two phone lines simultaneously — calls coming in to either line will ring your phone, and you’ll be able to easily make calls and send texts from either line without reconfiguring settings or swapping out SIM cards.

Note that you won’t be able to send and receive data on both lines simultaneously, however. If one line is on a call, incoming calls to the other number will go to voicemail.

How is eSIM different from Apple SIM?

Originally known as Apple SIM, the first version of Apple’s software-based SIM showed up on the LTE-enabled iPad and Apple Watch Series 3. We believe the fundamental technology is the same, but iOS 12 has introduced improvements to the user interface.

Can I add lines from different carriers?

Yes. Apple says that you can add lines from two different carriers, but only if your iPhone is unlocked. And this is the major catch. If your phone is not unlocked, both plans must be from the same carrier. And, if a CDMA carrier — such as Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular, Boost and Virgin — provides your first SIM, your second SIM won’t support CDMA.

Read: Unlocked phones vs. locked phones

Can I use eSIM on a locked iPhone?

When you buy an iPhone directly from Apple, online or at an Apple store, it’s unlocked — meaning that it can be configured for and activated on any carrier’s network (e.g. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint). A Genius inserts an AT&T SIM, for example, activates your phone on AT&T’s network, and you’re off to the races.

But once a phone is locked, your options become much more limited. As my colleague Maggie Reardon explains, “A locked phone has a software code on it that prevents you from using it on another network. An unlocked phone either doesn’t have the software lock on it or someone was able to get a code that unlocks the software. Once a device is unlocked, you can pop out the SIM card and put in a different SIM and get service.” Most carriers require you to fully pay of your phone before they’ll unlock it, and other restrictions may apply. (AT&T’s Unlock Portal provides a checklist of requirements for unlocking your phone and switching to another carrier.)

An unlocked phone with a plastic SIM needs a new plastic SIM in order to switch to a new carrier. An eSIM, on the other hand, can accommodate multiple SIM profiles from multiple carriers. Until now, eSIM hasn’t garnered much support from carriers, who are understandably wary of making it easier for customers to activate another carrier’s service.

When will Apple launch its eSIM feature?

Apple activated eSIM functionality when it released iOS 12.1 on Oct. 30. But after discovering some technical issues, US carriers called time out on supporting eSIM. Since then, AT&T and Verizon have activated support for the feature on their end.

How do I set up eSIM on the new iPhone?

Owners of a 2018 iPhone will be able to access the eSIM through the iPhone settings. According to Apple VP Phil Schiller, you’ll be able to use the phone’s camera to scan a carrier QR code, which will kickstart the process for activating a second line. Then, iOS will let you select a default line for calling and messaging, choose a label for each line, and so on.

Apple has listed step-by-step instructions for setting up an eSIM on its support site.

Can an eSIM be overwritten?

An eSIM can be overwritten and accommodate a phone plan from any carrier that supports the technology.

Which carriers support eSIM technology?

Apple says that eSIM works in 16 countries. In the US, AT&T and Verizon officially initiated support for the feature during the first week of December. (A Sprint spokesperson assured CNET that the company will support the feature in the near future.) Internationally, participating carriers currently include EE, Vodafone, Truphone, Bell, GigSky, Jio, Airtel and Deutsche Telekom.

At the Sept. 12 keynote, Apple VP Phil Schiller said that more carriers will add support throughout the fall and into next year.

Are there are other phones that have dual-SIM technology? And don’t the newer Google Pixel phones have an eSIM?

There are plenty of phones that can accommodate two SIM cards, though most of them aren’t available in the US, but only a few so far that support eSIM. The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 both have eSIM — but it’s primarily for use with Google’s Project Fi cellular service.

Do I have to get approval from my main carrier to add a second phone number?

No, you don’t need approval or permission to add a second phone number. In fact, the major upside of eSIM is that you don’t even need to go to a store to activate that second line — it can all be done remotely.

Why doesn’t eSIM work in China?

Apple announced a special edition of the new iPhones for China, which will have two plastic SIM card slots instead of eSIM technology. According to Neil Shah, who covers mobile technology for Counterpoint Research, dual-SIM technology is popular in China — but few carriers there have built out support for eSIM technology.

Will we see more eSIM phones in the US?

Probably. After all, Apple often sets the trends. Will Stofega, who covers mobile phones for IDC, says that carriers have been wary of eSIM, fearing that it could lead customers to jump from plan to plan. But he points out that a new international standard set in June 2016 may pave the way for greater adoption of eSIM in the US and abroad, especially if carriers realize all of the benefits of selling and provisioning phones remotely — activities that have needed to be done manually in stores, until now.

For all the supposed disruption that e-books brought to the publishing industry, the digital versions look still look an awful lot like the paper ones you could have bought a century ago.

Nighttime orange text to avoid sleep disturbance is nice, but digital text on a tablet is basically the same as ink text on paper. Comic books and graphic novels go a bit farther. Still, most e-books fall far short of the creativity shown in paper with the “Little Lamb” finger puppet book or Maurice Sendak’s “Mommy?” pop-up book.

E-books could become much more dynamic and interactive, though. That’s because two groups — the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) — are trying to join forces. The first advances and standardizes the technology underpinning the Web; the second the Epub format used to package e-books. In a statement Tuesday, Web creator and W3C leader Tim Berners-Lee said the planned merger would “create a rich media environment for digital publishing.”

The current Epub 3.0 standard already uses Web technologies, but e-books remain a separate domain from the Web. The new Portable Web Publications effort would erase the distinction. That would make it easier to publish a single Web document that’s conveniently separated into multiple chapters, lets you flip from page to page, and better handles math formulas in textbooks.

But the more exciting opportunities would be encouraging authors to draw on the Web’s power: enlivening books with video, audio and photos; enriching them with links to outside sources like footnotes on steroids; and even adding running software like the dynamic illustrations in Mike Bostock’s guide to visualizing various computer algorithms.

When you’re flipping pages as fast as possible through the latest thriller or bodice-ripper, you may not want more than pages of text. That’s fine. But so many books, especially for kids, education and non-fiction, could benefit from broader technical horizons.

And ideally, a Web-based e-book would have a better shelf life, so to speak, than an app version of a book like “A New Kind of Science,” not updated since 2014, or “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” not updated since 2015 and not even available for Android phones or tablets. After all, the Web has a good reputation for longevity and reaches just about any computing device.

If you have a smartwatch, you’ve probably seen it spend a lot of time with its charging system. Most of those wearables are meant to sit on your nightstand, recharging every night in order to have enough juice to the survive the day. Forget to charge it and you’ll have to deal with a dead watch. The Looksee Labs Eyecatcher smart bracelet on Kickstarter wants to remove power worries from the wearables equation.

This is a very different animal from a gadget like the Apple Watch . There are no buttons. You won’t activate it with a finger swipe. The display isn’t in color. Everything that shows up on the bracelet is controlled through an iOS smartphone app. It does have 8MB of built-in memory for storing up to 12 images for when your phone is out of reach.

The Eyecatcher is part fashion accessory, part practical. It can display a slideshow of patterns or pictures or show off a regular watch face. Like with smartwatches, it also displays alarms, news and app notifications.

Eyecatcher bracelet
The Eyecatcher can change with your mood.
Looksee Labs

Looksee Labs says the battery will last up to a year on a single charge. That depends on use, of course, so expect something shorter if you’re constantly updating the watch’s display all day and night long. Still, if the battery is anywhere close to as promised, the Eyecatcher will be a rare beast in today’s landscape of power-hungry mobile devices.

The low-power, flexible electrophoretic display (more commonly known as electronic paper or e-ink) is key to the promised long-lasting battery life.

The Kickstarter project is aiming to raise $75,000. It just launched and has so far attracted nearly $50,000. Early-bird pledge prices for an Eyecatcher start at $214 (about £140, AU$300). Keep in mind that not all crowdfunding campaigns deliver as expected and on time.

The concept of an e-ink bracelet has appeared before. The tago arc was successfully funded on Indiegogo earlier this year with an Android-only bracelet focused on offering different patterns and images. What sets the Eyecatcher apart from this is the iPhone compatibility and the ability to display news and notifications, a la smartwatches.

The Eyecatcher isn’t trying to supplant smartwatches; it’s trying to sidle up next to them like a stealthy supermodel, drawing your attention to the possibilities of a high-tech gadget that is as much about fashion as it is about function.

The Ares 8L and Ares 10L are the first Nextbook tablets with support for Verizon’s data network.
E-Fun

E-Fun on Monday announced a pair of new Android tablets, the Nextboook Ares 8L and 10L, both of which are equipped for Verizon’s 4G LTE network and feature budget-friendly prices.

The duo share a number of hardware specifications between them, however there is one notable difference: the former is a traditional tablet experience while the latter is a 2-in-1 device that comes with a keyboard.

Although both tablets are supported by Verizon, customers will need to purchase them via Walmart. The Ares 8L retails for $144 or $4.88 with a two-year contract. The 10L carries a slightly premium $193 price tag, or $9.88 with the same service agreement.

E-Fun, a US-based manufacturer, has been providing tablets and mobile devices powered by both Android and Window software since 2010. Its tablets, which tend to cater to first-time or less demanding users, compliment more powerful and glamorous models such as the Galaxy Tab S2 . Both of these new models are less expensive than other Verizon tablets and help to round out the carrier’s portfolio along the low end.

Running Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Ares 8L and 10L are equipped with quad-core Intel Atom processors with 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is pegged at 16GB, but users can insert a microSD card (up to 64GB) for additional space.

As alluded to by their names, the Ares 8L comes with an 8-inch display while the Ares 10L has a 10.1-inch screen. Both offer a 1,280×800-pixel resolution, meaning the image may appear more crisp on the smaller model.

Whereas the 8L is your standard entry-level Android tablet experience, the 10L picks up added flexibility. The unit comes with a magnetic detachable keyboard, making typing much more simple. Moreover, the keyboard houses two standard USB ports for extra functionality. Other specifications in the pair of tablets include 2-megapixel front-facing and rear cameras, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Both tablets are available now at select Walmart stores as well as Walmart’s website.

A countdown clock on Jet.com has been ticking down for days before the official launch.
Jet.com

Is it possible to beat Amazon at its own game? That’s the multibillion-dollar question e-commerce newcomer Jet.com is looking to answer.

Jet’s much-anticipated website opened for business Tuesday, with its bold claim that it can undercut prices from just about any online retailer — including Amazon, which is already known for low prices. The Hoboken, New Jersey, startup, backed by $225 million in funding, offers annual memberships of $50 for its US Internet shopping club, which offers about 7.5 million products for sale, including TVs, toilet paper, hangers and T-shirts — just a fraction of Amazon’s total US listings.

The launch serves as Round 2 for Marc Lore, Jet’s founder and CEO. In 2010, he sold his 5-year-old startup Quidsi, owner of Diapers.com and Soap.com, to Amazon for $545 million after Amazon initiated a price war against his company. Lore eventually left Quidsi in 2013.

Jet is part of a fresh wave of competition against Amazon, the reigning worldwide leader of online retail by revenue. Other retailers are starting to develop new membership programs to rival Amazon’s $99-a-year Prime service, which offers unlimited two-day shipping and other perks. Along with Jet, Walmart is experimenting with a $50-a-year three-day shipping program called ShippingPass, and eBay is piloting a loyalty program in Germany called eBay+.

How newcomer Jet compares to Amazon

3:00

It will be difficult to go toe-to-toe against Prime, which includes an estimated 44 million accounts in the US. Amazon demonstrated the challenge last week when it staged a 20th anniversary sale called Prime Day that resulted in huge sales and hundreds of thousands of new Prime members. Also, Jet expects to take on big losses as it expands, but it will face a tough road trying to undercut Amazon, which routinely forgoes profits so it can elbow out competitors.

An Amazon representative declined to comment on Jet’s launch.

While it’s “flattering” to be compared to the e-commerce market leader, Jet is working on offering something different than Amazon, Liza Landsman, Jet’s chief customer officer, said in an interview. She said Jet plans to make a profit only off its membership fees, using a network of 2,200 retailers and its logistics software to cut down on the number of shipments and distance shipped to help save money for both retailers and customers.

The startup’s immediate goal will be bringing in new members, following a pilot program this year that included 100,000 people. To get the word out, Jet plans to spend $100 million over the next year, pitching itself broadly, not just to those in Amazon Prime or members of other buyers clubs, like Costco’s or the Walmart-owned Sam’s Club.

RELATED STORIES

“We’re going to be really focused on getting a great number of consumers onto the platform, making sure their experience is so great” that they keep coming back, Landsman said.

Jet will be available in the contiguous 48 states and Washington, DC, offering free shipping for orders of $35 or more and a $6 flat fee for smaller orders. Other discounts will also be available, such as when a member agrees to waive the ability to return an item. To coax people into signing up, Jet will give early users free membership for six months.

The company will offer customers goods in three ways: either through sales from its own warehouses; through third-party sellers on its site, such as ASICS or Lenovo; or using a so-called “concierge” service, in which Jet will buy items on other retailers’ websites that it runs out of or doesn’t have. While costly, the concierge service will ensure Jet’s online shelves are well-stocked for its early days while the company works on building out its warehouses and inventory.

“The catalog is great now but will continue to grow over time,” Landsman said.

alibabadaneilzhang.jpg
Daniel Zhang, who took over as Alibaba’s new CEO on Sunday, plans to make Alibaba more of a global player.

Alibaba wants to go global in a big way.

Days after taking the helm as the company’s new CEO, Daniel Zhang told employees Wednesday he’s making international growth Alibaba’s primary mission in the coming year.

“We must absolutely globalize,” Zhang said, according to an official Alibaba website story published Thursday. “We will organize a global team and adopt global thinking to manage the business.”

Since its founding in 1999, Alibaba has skyrocketed to become China’s leading e-commerce company. It then used that success to launch the world’s biggest initial public offering ever last year, raising $25 billion on the New York Stock Exchange.

But while Alibaba has spread out with several e-commerce sites, a cloud-computing service, a marketing arm and many other offerings, it still derives substantially all of its revenue from China. Global expansion should help Alibaba diversify and find potentially millions of new customers for its services. Zhang even said Thursday that global expansion is a matter of survival, to ensure that the company will continue to exist for decades to come.

Alibaba’s intentions could create a new international competitor for Amazon, the world’s biggest e-commerce company by sales, and potentially spark some pricing wars as the two vie for customers. Meanwhile, Amazon has struggled to grow in China, where Alibaba and JD.com are major players in the market. Hoping to grow there, Amazon in March opened an online storefront within Alibaba’s Tmall site, making itself Alibaba’s customer and competitor at the same time.

So far, though, Alibaba has made only small moves outside its home country. It plans to invest heavily in new and existing overseas operations, including AliExpress, a cross-border marketplace to sell Chinese goods worldwide, and Tmall Global, which helps foreign brands sell online in China.

In the US, Alibaba has opened the retail site 11 Main and invested $15 million in US interior-design firm 1stdibs last year. It’s also put down larger bets on US-based shipper ShopRunner and messaging service Tango. Last week, it disclosed a roughly 10 percent stake in Seattle e-commerce company Zulily.

The YotaPhone 2 — the smartphone with a second E-ink display stuck to the back — is now available in a fresh white colour. It’s been given a bunch of software tweaks to make the E-ink screen more useful and is available directly from YotaPhone’s website for £440, a significant saving off the original £550 asking price.

The white colour is the only physical difference you’ll notice on the phone, as it’s mostly unchanged from the existing YotaPhone 2 we reviewed late last year. The new hue does give it a fresh look though, and I prefer it to the quite plain-looking black version. The E-ink screen on the rear has had its colours inverted, now displaying black text on a white background. This makes the panels of information — such as the time, RSS feeds and the weather — that bit more comfortable to read.

Functionally, the rear display is the same as before. It can show live information such as incoming emails and texts, mirror your regular LCD display or be used as an ebook reader — all of which uses less power on the E-ink side than it does on the LCD side. However, it has undergone some software updates.

RELATED STORIES

YotaPhone says it has made changes to the E-ink screen based on feedback from 5,000 users. Some of the major updates include the ability to display your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter feeds fullscreen, as well as being able to have the screen automatically cycle through your favourite photos. There’s also a fitness app which uses the pedometer to give an overview of steps taken throughout the day, an always-on football scores widget and the ability to use GMail from the rear display, instead of only the built-in YotaPhone client.

On paper at least, these updates go some way to addressing my two main issues I had with Yotaphone’s model last year: that it was too expensive and the rear screen didn’t really do enough. It’s still quite pricey for a phone that doesn’t have the sex-appeal of big names like Apple and Samsung, but the new updates and fresh colour may make it a more attractive option to squeeze into your pocket.

I’ll be updating our YotaPhone 2 review soon to include impressions of the new software.

The YotaPhone — the quirky Android mobile that has an LCD screen on the front and an e-ink panel on the back — is out in Europe this month. An e-ink screen, typically used on e-reader devices, is designed to be easier on the eyes and use less power than a regular LCD screen.

The phone debuts this month in Germany, Austria, France, and Spain for 499 euros. Yota says the phone is coming to the UK in January and the Middle East early next year.

There are no current plans to sell the YotaPhone in the US, but Yota told CNET that future versions of the phone might make it to the States. Yota spoke of its latest smartphone while hosting a news conference in Moscow, Russia.

“Smartphones will never be the same”

The smartphone world is incredibly competitive, and a tough place for new kinds of devices.

“We took a huge risk, and we did it,” Yota said of its ambition to build the YotaPhone. “We strongly believe smartphones will never be the same.”

During a Q&A, Yota said the phone allows for 50 hours of reading time using the e-ink screen. The company also said the battery life is similar to other smartphones if you are using the LCD screen. There are no plans to make a cheaper model of the YotaPhone without LTE, Yota said.

We’ve gone hands-on with the YotaPhone already, and while we were playing with a prerelease model with non-final software, we weren’t too impressed with the clarity of the e-ink screen, and a distinct lack of third-party apps means there’s not much you can do with that monochrome extra panel just yet.

The YotaPhone plays host to a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, while around the back there’s a 13MP camera.

Are you tempted by the YotaPhone? Let me know in the comments.
