We could soon see mobile devices with screen resolutions as high as 4K, according to a new report out of China that points to a 5.5-inch ZTE phone with a 3840×2,160-pixel display.

According to info scooped up by MyDrivers, the ZTE Star 3 could be the first smartphone to employ that groundbreaking display, the same Ultra HD resolution you could find on a 4K TV.
Allegedly, the device could employ a TFT Panel with some sort of crystal structure design to reduce power consumption.
Also noteworthy, the bezel is listed at a mere .55mm, which could mean a nearly edge-to-edge screen. Sharp’s edgeless Aquos Crystal smartphone, by comparison, only provides a 720-pixel picture.
There aren’t any other specifications to share at this time, but we might hope for something that contends with the upper end of the Android pack. ZTE’s predecessor of the alleged handset, the Star 2, boasted pretty admirable specs when it launched in late 2014.
With smartphone screen resolution on the rise (Samsung’s 5.1-inch Galaxy S6 sports a 2,560×1,1440-pixel display) the urge to climb is expected, but perhaps futile. CNET TV reviewer David Katzmaier has said that in video, resolution differences on 4K TVs can be hard to see, and that’s on screens many factors larger than a smartphone.
It’s not yet clear where the ZTE Star 3 would call home if it’s real, however I would be surprised if it strayed outside of China. It could also wind up in ZTE’s offshoot Nubia line for high-end phones; the Nubia Z9 announced last week should ship soon.
