Woolworths to offer budget pre

Grocery chain Woolworths is now a mobile virtual network operator using the Telstra 3G network, and will begin offering both pre-paid mobile and data-only plans from June 15.

Called Woolworths Connect, the MVNO will have two pre-paid mobile plans:

  • AU$30 plan that includes 1.5GB of data, AU$650 of standard calls in Australia and unlimited SMS.
  • AU$45 plan that includes 3.5GB of data, AU$1,500 of standard calls in Australia and unlimited SMS.

Both plans require the initial purchase of a SIM for AU$2 and feature unlimited calls between Woolworths Connect mobiles within Australia. Customers with a Woolworth’s Everyday Rewards card can get 10 percent off their recharge costs, making it AU$27 or AU$40.50 for each month.

The MVNO will also include 1GB of bonus data for on the AU$30 plan until July 31, 2015, making the allowance 2.5GB for people recharging within that six week window.

Additionally, Woolworths Connect will have three pre-paid 3G mobile broadband data-only options: AU$14.95 with 1.25GB and AU$29.90 for 3GB both for use domestically within a 30 day period,, and AU$99.90 for 10GB with a 180 day expiry. All of these also receive the 10 percent discount for Reward card holders.

Woolworths is licensing “parts of Telstra’s 3G network” for the Connect services. A Woolworths spokesperson was contacted for a clarification on what was being used and whether this meant limited coverage areas or limited use of the different 3G spectra, but had not replied at the time of publication.
