White Sony Ericsson Xperia Play finally comes to O2

O2 is finally flogging the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, in both its black and white guises. The white version is exclusive to the operator.

The Play had originally been set to launch on O2 in April. The operator delayed the launch due to problems with the handset’s software.

In a bid to reel in gamers, O2 is offering a free multimedia dock, valued at £30, plus three game downloads if the phone is ordered online. Available titles include Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Real Football 2011 and Brothers in Arms 2.

The phone is available on a range of tariffs. If you don’t mind shelling out £300 up front, you can get the Play on a £16.50-per-month 2-year plan, with a 500MB monthly data bolt-on.

To get the handset for free, you’ll have to cough up £37 per month. You can also buy it on a pay as you go deal for around £430.

White or not, we didn’t think that much of the Play. It has many promising features, but doesn’t make it easy to play games, which is kind of a critical flaw in a gaming phone. Its ability to play first-gen PlayStation titles certainly isn’t proving much of a hit either.
