What’s next for iPod Touch: The color white

If you were hoping that the fifth-gen iPod Touch would offer a higher-resolution camera, built-in 3G, and maybe a latte dispenser, don’t hold your breath. According to a report from MacRumors, there’s exactly one notable change coming to the next Touch, and it’s nothin’ but a coat of paint.

Specifically, Apple will introduce a white iPod Touch model as part of its upcoming new-product lineup. And, well, that’s about it. Added the report:

Only minor changes are expected for the existing hardware, with the addition of an oleophobic coating for the display and a revised ambient light sensor seemingly being the main differences. Otherwise, we expect the models to be nearly identical to the current fourth-generation iPod Touch model.

This data piggybacks an earlier report from Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who in July predicted that Apple would unveil a white Touch.

Also, as noted by AppleInsider, early builds of iOS 5 make reference to “iPod 4,2,” suggesting that a new iPod Touch would incorporate only minor differences (as opposed to, say, “iPod 5,1”).

All this is rumor, of course, and should be treated accordingly. But it does beg the question: do you want a white iPod Touch? Or is color not really a factor in your purchase decision?

And here’s the next question: what else do you want from an iPod Touch? A better camera probably goes without saying, but what about more storage? Lower prices? A bigger screen? Yeah, put me down for all three of those. And the better camera.
