It’s Verizon Wireless’s turn to show off its next big smartphone.
The nation’s largest carrier just sent out invitations to an event on July 23. Verizon promised to show off “the next generation of their most popular family of devices.”
While the invitation was light on the specifics, it’s almost certainly going to be the next round of Droid smartphones. A number of Motorola Droid phones have popped up in the rumor mill, and are likely the devices to be shown off by Big Red. In particular, the rumors point to the debut of a family of “Droid Ultra” phones, a successor to the Droid Razr line of products it launched last year.

Verizon has played it cool over the first few months of the year, relying on the momentum of the iPhone franchise and Galaxy S4 to propel sales, even as other carriers tout high-profile exclusives. The widely praised HTC One, for instance, still hasn’t yet reached the carrier, although the company has promised to eventually offer the phone. Verizon kept it low-key with the last launch, tweeting the announcement of the Lumia 928 by Nokia.
Alongside the Droid line of smartphones, Verizon could also show off the rumored Moto X, the customizable phone that is expected to be Google’s marquee device.
In attendance will be Verizon marketing executive Jeff Dietel. The event itself will be held at Lincoln Center Plaza in Manhattan. Check back in with CNET for all the details.
