The figure represents 51 percent of total smartphones activated, Shammo noted on a conference call Thursday. Verizon sold 4.1 million iPhones in the first quarter.
The carrier earlier reported a 21 percent gain in second-quarter profits as it added 1 million net customers. It activated a total of 7.5 million smartphones in the period.
Verizon didn’t disclose the number of Android activations, but it likely made up a bulk of the rest of the 49 percent of the phones activated in the period. While Verizon offers a number of other devices, including Windows Phones and BlackBerrys, Androids continue to make up a strong part of the company’s results, driven by products like the Samsung Galaxy S4.
