Verizon readying Moto Droid 3 and Droid X2

Samsung’s Droid Charge and HTC’s Droid Incredible 2 may be Verizon’s top “Droid” series smartphones today, but it appears that the carrier is ready to circle back around to the manufacturer that started the droid name.

Best Buy’s internal Cellebrite system now shows the Motorola Droid 3 (XT862) and Motorola Droid X2 (MB870) as coming handset options. While neither device has been officially announced by Moto or Verizon, the listings indicate a nearing launch.

The Droid 3 looks to feature the familiar sliding QWERTY form factor but with a twist. Among the improvements are a slightly larger, 4-inch display and front-facing camera, while gone is the lip that protrudes below the display for a more flush appearance than previous iterations. For processor speed and performance, we should expect to see a dual-core chipset, likely in the realm of a 1GHz Tegra 2.

The Droid X2 is nearly identical to its predecessor, save for the removal of the physical camera button. It’s the insides however, where things get beefed up. Recent rumors peg the X2 as having a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor with 768MB RAM, considerably more impressive than last summer’s model. Given the suggested $199 price tag, I don’t expect this to be one of Verizon’s 4G LTE handsets.

The Droid X2 is rumored to arrive as early as this month whereas the Droid 3 should land later this summer.
