The war in Ukraine has killed 136 children in the 31 days since the start of the Russian invasion, Ukraine’s office of the prosecutor general said on Saturday in a message on the Telegram app.

Of the total, 64 children have been killed in the Kyiv region, the office said. A further 50 children have died in the Donetsk region, it said.

Additionally, 199 children have been wounded.

On Thursday, UNICEF had said that the one month of war in Ukraine has led to the displacement of 4.3 million children – more than half of the country’s estimated 7.5 million child population. This includes more than 1.8 million children who have crossed into neighbouring countries as refugees and 2.5 million who are now internally displaced inside Ukraine.

“The war has caused one of the fastest large-scale displacements of children since World War II,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “This is a grim milestone that could have lasting consequences for generations to come. Children’s safety, wellbeing and access to essential services are all under threat from non-stop violence.”

According to reports, approximately 3.6 million refugees have fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries such as Poland, Moldova, and Romania in one month of the war.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Russia said that the aim of the military operation is to liberate the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatists have been fighting the Ukrainian army for the past eight years.

“The main objectives of the first stage of the operation have generally been accomplished,” said Sergei Rudskoi, head of the Russian General Staff’s Main Operational Directorate.

Russia had recognised Donetsk and Luhansk as independent republics just before it launched the war and used it as an excuse for invading Ukraine.

However, Moscow’s hope for a quick overthrow of the government in Kyiv has failed and according to reports its troops are being pushed out of many cities that they had initially captured.

Many observers feel that Russia is narrowing its goal of the war to Donbass to claim a face-saving victory despite a woeful campaign in which his army has suffered humiliating setbacks.
