Expecting the Exynos 5 Octa processor in your Australian Galaxy S4? Don’t count your core-chickens before they hatch.
When the Galaxy S4 launched last week (although it already seems like longer than that), we noted that Samsung had two variants of the handset CPU.
In one corner is the monster Samsung-made Exynos 5 Octa core, while in the other is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Fusion Pro — the quad-core Snapdragon 600.
While the second option may seem like a bit of a weak cousin to the first, it’s worth noting that the Snapdragon 600 also powers the Xperia X and the HTC One.
What isn’t clear is which countries will be getting which CPU — the global formal press release from Samsung said that the distribution would be decided on a regional basis, but it hasn’t revealed which regions.
Initial rumours had only the US getting the Snapdragon, but more recently, news began to circulate that Canada and, bizarrely, Sweden would also be receiving that model.
On launch day, we asked Samsung Australia if it was aware of the local plans for which variant of the phone would be launched locally. As of today, Samsung Australia has only been willing to direct us to part of the global statement:
We’re using Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Fusion Pro.
When queried on the assumption that Australians have so far believed we would definitely receive the Exynos 5 Octa processor models only, it was suggested that any assumption is incorrect until final confirmation on models have been made. No timing for such a confirmation could be suggested.
