Sprint Chairman and SoftBank Chief Masayoshi Son will petition the business community and lawmakers to support consolidation in the mobile market, a new report claims.
Son will host a presentation at the US Chamber of Commerce event in Washington, D.C., on March 11, where he’s expected to rail against the US wireless industry and make a plea for business owners and lawmakers to support a possible merger between his company and T-Mobile, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of his plans.
Sprint has yet to make an official merger offer to T-Mobile, but speculation abounds that the company will float such an idea sooner rather than later. Several lawmakers and regulators, including the Federal Communications Commission, have indicated that any overtures on Sprint’s part might be met with heavy criticism and could eventually end in a merger denial.
This isn’t the first time T-Mobile has been involved in outcry over a possible wireless merger. AT&T offered to acquire T-Mobile, only to have the deal turned back by regulators. It appears Son wants to shed some of those concerns before he makes a play for the carrier.
