Sprint announces sleek and ultralight LG Marquee

Who says fashion and technology can’t mix? Sprint, for one.

Today the carrier announced a new handset, the thin and superlight LG Marquee, putting it on track for an October 2 release. Powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the smartphone features a 1GHz processor, a 4-inch Nova display, 5-megapixel camera, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Known in other circles as the Optimus Black, the LG Marquee also offers users 512MB RAM, 2GB ROM, and requisite support for Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.

For software, the Marquee offers Swype for its virtual QWERTY keyboard and the standard fare of Sprint apps and services. Like many of the carrier’s other Android handsets, the device also supports Sprint ID, which lets users customize the five home screens with niche apps, ringers, wallpapers, widgets, and more.

Keeping in line with New York Fashion Week, the phone will be launched in partnership with MADE, a nonprofit design collective and will feature carrying cases designed by five up-and-coming designers. These cases will make their catwalk appearance tomorrow during LG’s launch event.

Presale orders of the LG Marquee start September 20 and run for one full week. Buyers who take advantage of the early offer will begin receiving their devices on September 29, three days before its debut in stores. The price is $99 with qualified two-year service agreements and after a $50 mail-in rebate.
