Sony Smart B-Trainer talks to you as you run

0:46

Runners who don’t want to wear a watch or carry a phone while they’re pounding out the miles might find this waterproof wearable more their speed. The Sony Smart B-Trainer headphones not only serve as a music player — with a hearty 16GB of storage — but come stuffed with fitness sensors such as a heart-rate tracker, gyroscope, compass and barometer, all for tracking your exercise session.

We first saw the B-Trainer at CES in January, and it’s just now going on sale in Australia and around south-east Asia. It comes in black, white, blue, red and the lime green you see below.

Working with those built-in sensors, the B-Trainer’s built-in training program is able to use the data collected on the go, for example monitoring your heart’s beats per minute and warning you to slow down if you’re running too fast. It will also change the music to your tempo to help you pace yourself correctly.

After your jog, you can sync the B-Trainer with a phone with Sony’s dedicated Smart B-Trainer app to get more information on your run. Designed purely for running, the B-Trainer isn’t compatible with swimming or cycling, so bear that in mind if you’re a budding triathlete.

For those who are keen and live in Asia or Australia, you’ll be pleased to know that you’ll be able to get your hands on this nifty piece of wearable tech this month. It’s already available in Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and will hit Australia sometime in June. In Thailand and the Philippines, it will arrive in July.

In Australia it’ll cost AU$349, and in Singapore it’ll be S$399 (a US equivalent would be around $300). Prices around the region will differ though, so do check with local outlets in your country for pricing, though it seems that Thailand will sell it the cheapest at 7,990 Thai Baht, which converts to around $240. A US launch date has not yet been announced.
