Sony Xperia SP is a mid

We’re only days away from the biggest date in the mobile phone calendar, and we’ve had a glimpse of another new phone to look forward to: the Sony Xperia SP.

Details of the the SP have leaked ahead of its launch. It’s a 4.6-inch phone with a high-definition 720p screen for crisp and detailed films, games and websites. Under the screen is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960T chipset, with a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and Adreno 320 graphics chip.

The SP has an 8-megapixel camera with an Exmor RS sensor, and 8GB of internal storage for your movies and music, apps and snaps.

One important detail that hasn’t leaked yet is what version of Android will be loaded into the SP, but fingers crossed for bang up-to-date Jelly Bean.

It’s encased in an aluminium frame with a plastic back, measuring 9.98mm. Word on the street is that it has a transparent notification bar like the Sony Xperia S, but the leaked photo doesn’t seem to show that.

Sony has struggled to stand out amongst the mobile crowd, and another mid-range Android phone won’t storm any barns. But solid, affordable phones will always be popular, even if they’re not that exciting.

We’re expecting to get a first glimpse of the SP alongside all the new devices at Mobile World Congress, the annual phone fiesta where mobile manufacturers, networks, and other telephonic types gather in Barcelona to show off this year’s phones and tablets. We’ll be there in force, so keep it CNET for all the essential news, previews and videos of the coolest new phones, tablets and other mobile hotness.
