Ice Cream Sandwich isn’t coming to the Sony Xperia S as soon as we’d hoped. After hinting that we could be seeing the latest version of Android on the Xperia S as soon as this month, Sony has admitted it spoke too soon.
This isn’t a delay as such, but a return to the original timescale for the Ice Cream Sandwich update. Last week a member of Sony’s support team revealed the update would hit the Xperia S in late May or early June — but it now appears that said support staffer had mixed up his Xperias. The May or early June update applies to other 2011 Xperia phones, but not the Xperia S.
The apologetic staffer confirms that the Xperia S will get Ice Cream Sandwich during the “latter part of Q2“. We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve nailed down a definite date.
Although Sony’s promised ICS for all its 2011 Xperia smart phones, the Japanese giant has said you may actually be better sticking with Android 2.3 Gingerbread — Sony’s proud of the “extreme stability” that its earlier edition offers. That’s a sentiment shared by Motorola, which has stated it won’t offer an upgrade unless Ice Cream Sandwich improves your phone’s experience.
This isn’t the first bit of to-ing and fro-ing we’ve seen over Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung made a right old mess of the update for the Samsung Galaxy S2, mainly because it failed to communicate with impatient phone fans when deadlines were repeatedly missed.
On the other hand, is it really so important to have the latest Android software? Why do we always have to be chasing the next thing? Why can’t we just enjoy the moment?
Yeah, whatever. Enough of that hippy nonsense — here’s ten reasons why Ice Cream Sandwich beats Gingerbread.
