Sony Xperia i1 ‘Honami’ shoots 4K video, leaked software tips

Sony’s next smart phone will capture 20-megapixel snaps and will shoot video at a whopping 4K resolution, leaked software suggests.

A system dump for a Sony phone with model number C6906 — believed to represent the rumoured Xperia i1 ‘Honami’ phone that’s been spied several times in recent weeks — has been pulled apart on the XDA Developers forum and helpfully collated at XperiaBlog.

Alongside a four-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the ‘system dump’ points to the power to take photos at a 20-megapixel resolution.

This is said to be done using a ‘Super Resolution’ tweak, so it’s possible the phone won’t actually have a 20-megapixel sensor, but will make up that resolution using some natty pixel-adding software.

The power to record video at 4,000×2,000 pixels is also reportedly on board. What exactly you’d then do with such a massive clip is anyone’s guess, as TVs and displays that can output 4K resolution videos in their full glory are hard to find, and expensive.

A revamped interface has also been exposed, and new camera features including ‘Timeshift burst’, which lets you pick the best frame from a series of burst shots (and sounds like features already present on the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4).

An augmented-reality camera mode is another possibility exposed in the leak, that could shoot your subjects in an underwater or space scene, if that sounds like something you’d enjoy. If you’re wavering, it looks like the ‘effects’ mode icon is represented by a dinosaur. Nice.

The phone is rumoured to be bigger than the 5-inch Xperia Z, but not quite as gargantuan as the 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra that was revealed last week. Nothing concerning this upcoming mobile is known for sure yet though, so you’d be wise to take all of this info with a pinch of salt.

Are you an avid smart phone photographer? Would you use these extensive shooting modes and features, or would you be happier with niceties like improved battery life? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.
