Sony Ericsson has moved to solve one of the Xperia X8‘s biggest problems by rolling out an Android 2.1 update for it.
Only released in October, the X8 joins its siblings, the Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro, in receiving an Android 2.1 update. The Xperia line has been stuck on Android 1.6 for a frustratingly long time, but Sony Ericsson is finally making a move to upgrade the devices.
If you have a model locked to a phone network, don’t expect to receive the update for a while. This is because Sony Ericsson has to create versions for each network. As some Xperia X10 owners are still waiting for Android 2.1, the X8 update may take a fair while to drop.
You can check whether your version of the phone has an update available. Have a look at the label on the back of your phone and write down the ‘SI number’. Then compare it to the numbers on this list published by Sony Ericsson. If there’s a match, you should be able to download the update.
When Android 2.1 does arrive on your X8, you’ll receive features such as support for multiple accounts on Google or Exchange email, plus an improved browser, camera app and on-screen keyboard.
Specific Sony Ericsson improvements include HD 720p video recording and DLNA connectivity.
