Despite significant setbacks, the Sony Ericsson team will deliver the Xperia Play handsets to stores across Australia on 8 June.

In an announcement today, Sony Ericsson confirmed the arrival of its first PlayStation-certified handset to both Telstra and Optus next week. It also finalised the list of games that will be pre-installed on the handset in Australia, adding EA’s Madden 11 to the five games announced back in March, including Sony’s first PlayStation One port, Crash Bandicoot.
Optus will launch the Play for free on an AU$79 per month plan over 24 months, or for AU$5 per month on a AU$59 plan, and will also offer three more free Gameloft game downloads if you purchase the Play before 30 July. Telstra is yet to announce pricing.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is the first Android smartphone to feature slide-out dedicated gaming controls and access to exclusive PlayStation gaming titles. Update: Telstra has slipped the Play into its range even earlier, with the handset on sale from June 3 for AU$20 per-month on a AU$79 Freedom Connect plan.
