Sony Ericsson Xperia phones to get Ice Cream Sandwich by March

Sony Ericsson Xperia phones released this year should be updated to Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) by March, Xperiablog reports.

The tip comes via Sony Ericsson Italy’s Facebook page, where a chap called Maurizio De Palma, who would appear to be the company’s head of marketing, has responded to a question about when Sony Ericsson’s Xperia blowers would be getting a scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich.

The response says the update “should arrive by March” (translation).

That’s good news if you own an Xperia phone that came out this year, like the Xperia Arc or Xperia Play.

Sony Ericsson has already confirmed that 2011 Xperia mobiles would be getting an update to Android 4.0, but now we have at least a rough estimate of when we can actually expect it to go live.

The only fly in the ointment is that the Xperia Play and Xperia Arc both came out in March this year. So if Sony Ericsson sticks so that schedule, bringing out its new headline mobiles in March 2012, it might not want to update all its existing phones to Ice Cream Sandwich at the same time in case that puts people off buying the new ones.

We’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, tell us whether you’d be happy to wait until March for a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, or whether you think phone owners deserve updates sooner. You can tell us in the comments, or over on our Facebook wall.
