Sony Ericsson’s dainty Xperia Mini Pro is now available from Vodafone.
Don’t be put off by its cutesy size, because the Mini Pro has an extra half inch on its X10 predecessor and packs an Android punch with the latest 2.3 Gingerbread software. In our hands-on preview, we loved the deceptive amount of keyboard space which slides out in landscape mode, giving you more room to type than you’d get from a BlackBerry. Eat that, RIM.
The side effect of this awesome keyboard is being a little more chubby than its thinner brother, the Mini. But still, it’s only 136g — and there’s more to this book than the cover.
The predictive text knows what you’re going to write next like a robot sage, and a ‘Type & Send’ function lets you deal with all your messages straight from the home screen.
Once you’re signed in to Facebook, it promises you’ll never miss a social event again, with push notifications keeping abreast of your calendar life. Those birthday alerts should save your behind a few times.
Videos look better than you might expect from a 3-inch screen, thanks to Bravia video-smoothing technology, which is a treat when viewing your homemade 720p high-definition videos on the go. The 5-megapixel camera is pretty smart with still photos too.
Another bonus with this model is the room for multiple Android widgets on each home screen, unlike the former Mini Pro, which could only fit a measly one.
Those expecting power might be looking elsewhere, but don’t write off the Mini Pro just yet. There’s a reasonable single-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor.
Finally, you’ll get up to 5 hours 40 minutes talk time, and 320MB to play with.
The Xperia Mini Pro is available for free on Vodafone when you sign up to a £25 contract for 24 months, giving you 500 minutes, 250 texts and 500MB of data.
