A mysterious YouTube video has been uploaded, showing details of what could be the first Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 mobiles, to come out early next year.
There’s no information on where it’s from or who it’s by, so it could be anything between a cooked-up fantasy and a genuine leak. We contacted Sony Ericsson, and we’ll let you know if we receive a confirmation or denial.
The vid shows specs of a Windows Phone 7 Xperia X7 handset, carrying a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen with 480×800-pixel WVGA resolution. It has a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, with an 8.1 megapixel camera and HDMI output, as well as Dolby Digital Plus surround sound.
The Xperia X7 looks like a perfectly viable handset. That screen size has already been seen with the HTC HD7, while it more or less matches the HTC Mozart’s 8-megapixel camera. But a 1.2GHz processor would be a step up from existing Windows Phone 7 models, as well as every other smart phone currently on the market.
The Xperia X7 Mini has a not-so-mini 3.5-inch touchscreen, with a 1GHz processor. It also has a 10.1-megapixel camera, which would be the best resolution we’ve seen in a Windows Phone 7 device yet. It’s reported to offer 720p video recording, a 3x optical zoom and a xenon flash. The video also mentions noise-cancellation headphones, to come bundled with the device.
It’s particularly interesting that the Mini is marked to have a more advanced camera. With the Xperia Android handsets, the X10 Mini was generally considered a cheaper, low-spec version of the Xperia X10. This would not be the case here, as the camera looks pretty impressive compared to anything we’ve seen from the Windows Phone 7 hardware so far.
It’s already common knowledge that Sony Ericsson is a Windows Phone 7 partner, with handsets in the offing. Considering how long it took to release its first Android device, the Xperia X10, a release next year for the Xperia X7 mobiles wouldn’t be that much of a surprise.
But for now, all of this is simply hearsay. The images displayed in the vid are obviously just mock-ups — a couple of rectangles filled with Windows Phone 7 imagery and a Sony Ericsson label at the top.
But if the rumours are substantiated, Sony Ericsson could well be back in the game, especially if we see a Playstation phone and Xperia X12 alongside the alleged new handsets.
