Sony’s next major Xperia smartphone release will ditch the hardware buttons on previous releases and use Google’s on-screen controls instead.
Going by the codename Mint, images of the new phone have leaked, showing a softer design compared with the Xperia range we’ve seen so far this year. The phone shown in the leak is running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, though with time before it hits stores, Sony may be able to sneak a Jelly Bean update on to the device before we have a chance to play with it.
On paper, the Mint looks to be among the most powerful Xperias to date, sporting a new dual-core Qualcomm Krait CPU and 1GB of RAM. It will apparently include a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, 16GB of storage with a micro-SD card slot and a screen comparable to the one we saw on the Xperia S earlier this year: 4.3 inches with a 720p HD resolution.
Official details of this new phone are expected to come on 29 August, when Sony plans to hold a press conference in Berlin just days before the doors open on the annual IFA electronics expo in the same city.
