Simple Mobile lowers its unlimited 4G plan to $50

If you have or were considering buying an unlocked smartphone, Simple Mobile hopes its new $50 4G data plan just might tempt you to sign up. Starting August 1, the carrier reseller will shave $10 off of its current Unlimited High Speed plan.

Mobile virtual network operators such as Simple Mobile aren’t particularly new but this company’s offering was alluring at $60 per month. Plus Simple Mobile actually encourages users to bring their own unlocked phones on board. Now at $50, the MVNO’s Unlimited High Speed plan provides the same list of wireless features including domestic and international texts, e-mail, and Web surfing, all at 3G and 4G HSPA+speeds.

Also, since Simple Mobile’s service runs on T-Mobile’s cellular backbone, data throughput could theoretically be as high as 15Mbps down, the 4G data speeds TMO handsets typically boast. Of course, I doubt T-Mobile allows third-party subscribers to consume that much bandwidth.

Even so, speed equivalent to moderate 4G places Simple Mobile in the same league as other prepaid budget competitors. Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and MetroPCS now offer 4G data, either in flavors of WiMax or LTE technology. I reserve final judgement, though, until I get my hands on a Simple Mobile SIM.
