Sharp will introduce an Android-based Aquos smart phone to markets outside Japan.
The Aquos SH-12C launched in Japan last week, alongside two other Android siblings. At CNET UK Towers, the phone caused many eyebrows to raise in an intrigued fashion, due to the presence of a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor, dual cameras and 4.2-inch, 3D-capable touchscreen.
The SH-12C may not be the handset that makes it to markets outside of Japan, though. Sharp also has a variant of that phone, with a 3.7-inch touchscreen, while the Aquos Hybrid 007SH clamshell phone features a whopping 16-megapixel camera, 3D screen and digital TV tuner.
As you’d expect for phones carrying the Aquos name, some of Sharp’s TV technologies have made it onto the small screen. These include picture-sharpening and colour-adjustment features, and DLNA support so you can stream content to, for example, TVs and computers.
The cutting-edge tech enjoyed by Japanese consumers doesn’t always reach the world’s other denizens, however, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Sharp’s global offering lacks some of the features seen in its domestic handsets.
Sharp is keeping quiet on specifications, countries and release dates for an internationally available Aquos phone, saying only that it will launch in China and other countries.
Incidentally, Sharp’s already rumoured to be the supplier of an extra-thin display for the iPhone 6.
