Samsung’s Galaxy S7 phone may be water resistant

It hasn’t been officially announced, but details on the Samsung Galaxy S7 continue to rain down.

A video on a Samsung Indonesia website offers the tagline “Get ready for #TheNextGalaxy.” The clip is posted alongside a timeline that hints at the Galaxy S7.

The video shows Indonesian archer Dellie Threesyadinda as she takes a Galaxy S phone with her during an intense training session. One scene reveals her removing the phone from a wireless charger. A later scene shows her using the phone in the rain as drops bounce harmlessly off the screen.

The Galaxy S7 needs to capture the interest of consumers after last year’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge failed to provide a boost to Samsung’s struggling smartphone sales. The company has been hurt by budget-friendly Chinese phones on the low end and by Apple’s iPhone on the high end. The challenge for Samsung is to outfit its flagship phone with modern, enticing features yet keep the price competitive.

Water resistance and wireless charging are nothing new to phones, and it’s unclear if the expected features would ignite consumers’ interest. Even with all the rain in the teaser, Samsung noted in the video description that the “product is not water resistant” and the clip is strictly a dramatization.

The site also mentions that Samsung will reveal its next flagship phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on February 22, Indonesia time, which translates to February 21 in Barcelona. Nothing confirmed is known about the new phone or its likely curved edge brother, the Galaxy S7 Edge, but various rumors have popped up about possible new features.

The Galaxy S7 could sport a larger screen than the 5.1-inch Galaxy S6. Samsung may introduce its own version of Apple’s 3D Touch, which offers a pressure-sensitive screen, and also bring back the microSD card slot. An eye scanner may join the fingerprint sensor as another way to unlock the phone and confirm your identity. In a bid to attract more budget-conscious consumers, the phone may cost less than the S6.

The S7 is also expected to include a camera that can perform better in low-light conditions and doesn’t stick out of the back of the phone, as does the one on the Galaxy S6.
