Samsung to announce new tablet alongside Galaxy S3 on 3 May?

Samsung’s cryptic invitation to “Come and meet the next Galaxy” at an event in a couple of weeks offers us precious little information about what we can expect from the new device. All signs point to it being the unveiling of the Galaxy S3, but new rumours suggest that Samsung might launch a new tablet alongside the keenly-anticipated phone.

According to a report by our cousins at CNET Asia, the device will be a 10.1-inch tablet, but it won’t be the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. Intriguing…

The report references a source familiar with the matter. There are no specs apart from the size. It would be a strange move by Samsung to launch yet another 10.1-inch tablet, seeing as it already has two Galaxy Tabs at that size, as well as the Galaxy Note 10.1.

The invite to the London event on 3 May makes no reference to more than one device, but then it doesn’t give much away. I’ve been staring at those blobs for some time now trying to work it out, but so far nothing’s come to me.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 production has been halted so the Korean company can stuff in a quad-core processor. There is a chance the report’s source has their wires crossed, and it’s the new quad-core version Samsung will unveil on 3 May, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is hotly anticipated to be the star of the show come 3 May, though according to our own mobile industry source, it won’t be called the S3. It made an appearance on the German Amazon site recently, with specs listed as a 12-megapixel camera, a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, 16GB of storage, and with the Ice Cream Sandwich build of Android.

That may well sound like a modest upgrade to the S2, but considering the S2 was possibly the most impressive phone released last year, that’s no bad thing.

What are you hoping come 3 May? Would Samsung be wise to launch another 10.1-inch tablet? And what would you call the S3? Let me know in the comments below, or over on our Facebook page.
