Samsung’s Android-bashing Tizen is to make its public debut in February — and thanks to leaked screenshots, you can feast your minces on a sneak preview of the long-awaited operating system.
Tizen will take a bow on 23 February at a press conference in Barcelona ahead of Mobile World Congress, the annual industry event where phone companies lay out their wares for the year.
SamMobile spotted a selection of screenshots, pictured above and below, that give an idea how Tizen will work.
Tizen is an operating system currently developed by Samsung and Intel and others, destined for cameras, TVs, laptops, cars, you name it — but perhaps most importantly it will power mobile phones as an alternative to Android. Google’s Android has played a big part in making Samsung the biggest phone manufacturer in the world, but Samsung wants to stop funnelling money to the Big G from every phone.
I got to have a look at Tizen at last year’s MWC, and it was a right dogs’ dinner. The OS was shown off at a swanky event where Samsung and other companies announced their partnerships and grand plans, but the software itself simply didn’t work — lord knows why they let me see it.
Judging by the images above, Tizen has come along in leaps and bounds in the past twelve months or so — we’ll find out in February, when your humble CNET team decamps en masse to Barcelona to bring you news, previews, videos and hands-on first impressions of all the coolest new phones and tablets that will rock your world in 2014.
We’ll also be catching up with Firefox OS, Ubuntu for mobile, and the other upstart smart phone operating systems looking to take a bite out of Android and the iPhone.
Which upstart OS do you think has the best chances? Will Tizen take Samsung to the next level? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
