Samsung has already begun revving up U.S. consumers eager for more details about its popular Galaxy S II smartphone.
With the GS II set to launch in the U.S. in August, Samsung has set up a sign-up page where potential buyers can fill out a form to receive more info on the phone and learn about special offers. Consumers are invited to submit their name, e-mail address, mobile phone number, and carrier of choice.
The Galaxy S II made its debut in its home base of South Korea on April 29 before reaching Japan and several European countries in May. Since then, the phone has racked up more than 5 million in unit sales in its first 85 days. More than 3 million of those sales were seen in the first month alone, according to Samsung.
Following its launch in China earlier this week, the phone will be available in the U.S. next month through three of the major carriers under three different names. Sprint will push it as the Samsung Within, Verizon Wireless as the Samsung Function, and AT&T as the Samsung Attain. Looking to sell the GS II in 120 countries in total, Samsung is aiming for sales of 10 million units by the end of the year.
The phone has received kudos for its impressive lineup of specs, including a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel camera in back, and a 2-megapixel camera in front. Outfitted with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the GS II also offers a customized interface courtesy of Samsung’s TouchWiz 4.0.
Partly on the strength of demand for the GS II, Samsung is now the world’s second leading smartphone vendor, ahead of Nokia and slightly behind Apple, according to a new report from research firm Strategy Analytics.
