Samsung sells 10m Galaxy S3 smart phones, says told you so

Samsung has made good on its word and sold 10 million Galaxy S3 smart phones, AFP reports. That’s not bad going at all, considering the phone only launched in May.

The company originally forecast it would reach the milestone by the end of July, and it’s beat that by over a week. Break out the bunting, Samsung. This calls for a celebration.

JK Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile communication division, told Yonhap news agency: “It appears that it [in accumulated sales] has exceeded 10 million units.” He then breathed on his fingernails and rubbed them on his lapel.

This is just the beginning though for the S3. Samsung predicted the phone would sell almost double this figure, hitting 19 million sales by the autumn. High hopes indeed, especially considering a new iPhone is expected to touch down around then.

It’s not an impossible target to reach though. The Galaxy S and S2 combined have sold a phenomenal 50 million units, and the Galaxy Note has already hit 7 million. We’re also expecting a 64GB variant of the S3 to be with us soon, which would no doubt give sales a shot in the arm.

The S3 is also rumoured to be getting the jump to Android Jelly Bean. According to Sammobile, the Korean company has finished the refresh, and will push out the update in August or September.

The S3 is the phone of the year so far. It features a 4.8-inch screen, and it can detect eye movements to know when you’re looking at it, so the screen stays on until you avert your gaze.

Do you think the S3 will reach 19 million sales in the face of a new iPhone? Would you buy a 64GB S3? And what will the next iPhone have to do to wrestle back its smart phone crown from Samsung? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
