Samsung offers more Media Hub details

One of the features that sets the Samsung Galaxy S smartphones apart from the sea of other Android phones is Media Hub–a gateway to downloading movies and TV shows to your phone. Unfortunately, the service wasn’t quite ready for prime time when the phones launched, but that’s about to change.

At a press event in Manhattan today, Samsung announced that Media Hub will go live imminently and also revealed partner information.

As for what you’ll be able to download to your phone, Samsung has worked with a number of entertainment studios, including Paramount, NBC Universal, Warner Bros., and MTV Networks, to provide the content and ensure that it’s optimized for viewing on a phone. At launch, the catalog will contain more than 1,000 movies and TV shows, and Samsung will continue to add to the library over time.

Samsung said pricing will be competitive, and any content that you purchase can be shared on up to five Media Hub-enabled devices.

Though specific release dates weren’t given, Galaxy S phone owners will receive an over-the-air (OTA) update on their phone once the service is available. Samsung said it will post OTA news for each of the four Galaxy S phones–the Samsung Epic 4G, Vibrant, Captivate, and Fascinate–on its Web site, social media channels, and customer care hot lines.

In addition to the Media Hub news, Samsung announced that the Galaxy Tab will be coming to the four major U.S. carriers.
